How To Give a Computer Maintenance in Windows 7 (32 & 64 bit)

This will guide you through the process of giving general maintenance to a computer running Windows 7 (32 & 64 bit). If your system is not running the way it was running when first bought, then it needs a tune up. This guide will also tell you how to save some valuable space in your hard drive. The guide will use one free downloadable application (CCleaner) and the rest will be done only with Windows tools.

Downloading CCleaner

  1. Go to the following URL to download CCleaner:
  2. Click the link that says “Download Latest Version” in the top right corner of the page

    • Note: If using Internet Explorer, a yellow bar will appear at the top of the page
      • Click on it
      • Download File
  3. A new windows will appear, click on Save button
  4. Another window will appear, click on Save button once again
  5. Once it finishes downloading, click Run button
  6. Click Yes button in the next window [User Account Control window]
  7. Follow the installation steps to install it
    • Once you get to the following window, uncheck last check box
    • Click Install button
    • Click Finish button
      • Note: The program should run automatically afterwards

Using CCleaner

This process will delete all temporary files from internet browsers and fix issues with the registry.

  1. Before proceeding, all browser windows will be needed to be closed
    • Browser windows include Internet Explorer, Chrome, FireFox, Opera, or Safari
  2. Click Run Cleaner button
    • Once CCleaner finishes, it should show a windows similar to this one

  3. Click Registry button
  4. Click Scan for Issue
  5. Once CCleaner finished scanning click Fix selected issues button

    • A warning will appear. Click Yes, then Save.
  6. In the new windows, click Fix All Selected Issues
  7. Click Close
  8. Exit program

Killing non-essential Startup Programs

This process will make your computer boot up (start) faster.

  1. Click Windows Logo (Start)
  2. Type msconfig in search box
  3. Select msconfig.exe from top of the list
  4. In System Configuration window select Startup tab
  5. Browse throughout the list un-checking common non-essential star up programs
    • Note: Common programs include, but not limited to:
    • QuickTime
    • Any line containing the word Google in it
    • Windows Messenger
    • Yahoo Messenger
    • Any line containing the word Adobe in it
    • iTunes
    • WinampAgent
    • Groove Monitor Utility
    • Real Player
  6. Click Apply
  7. Click OK

Recovering valuable hard disk space

Usually the Recycle Bin has reserved about 1GB space in hard drive for trash. Internet browsers have reserved about 100MB of hard drives pace. This just wastes hard drive space and by following this process, this wasted space will be freed and can be used for storing other stuff, like music, movies, etc.

  1. Right Click in Recycle Bin located in the desktop
  2. A menu will appear, click Properties
  3. Enter 50 in the following text box and then OK
  4. Open up Internet Explorer
  5. Click Alt key in the keyboard
    • A menu will appear below the address bar
  6. Click on Tools, then Internet Options
  7. Below Browsing history section, click on Settings button
  8. In the first text box enter 50
  9. In the second text box enter 7
  10. Click OK button in Temporary Internet Files and History window
  11. Click OK button in Internet Options window
  12. Close Internet Explorer

Now that you have fallowed the steps for giving a computer general maintenance and tune-up, your computer will start-up faster and you have had freed some valuable hard drive space. The process should be the same under WindowsXP.
